Mechanics of Contact Improvisation

Contact improvisation is a dance practice based on sharing weight, touch, momentum, and movement with another person. Dancers use points of contact to sense each other´s weight and respond continuously to changes in balance. Rolling, leaning, falling, lifting, and spiraling are common ways of moving through space while maintaining or changing contact. Rather than following fixed choreography, dancers improvise by listening through their bodies and adapting to gravity, momentum, and the partner’s movement. The mechanics of the practice depend on relaxation, clear physical communication, efficient use of weight, and awareness of safety for both dancers.
